Financing for food-service franchise owners

Restaurant franchise loans from setup to expansion

Restaurant loans need to cover a workable opening or purchase budget as well as the cash needed to operate.

Separate the cost categories before seeking funding

FundMyFranchise helps arrange restaurant franchise financing across Canada for new locations, existing business purchases and expansion. We connect kitchen equipment, premises costs and the operating plan with an in-house business plan and a clear lender application.

Build a budget that explains what each amount will purchase and when it is needed. A single total for the restaurant does not show a lender the difference between equipment, construction, franchise commitments and operating cash. Attach supplier and contractor information where available, and identify allowances that still need confirmation.

Include costs outside the headline franchise investment. Your proposed loan is only one source of funding; owner contributions and the timing of payments belong in the same schedule. Financing eligibility must be considered for the specific cost and product.

  • Kitchen equipment, refrigeration, furniture and point-of-sale requirements.
  • Leasehold work and other premises-related costs supported by project estimates.
  • Franchise-related payments, opening stock and launch requirements.
  • Operating reserves and identified amounts outside the proposed loan.

Turn the operating model into a practical forecast

Your plan should explain how the location will operate, rather than relying on brand recognition alone. Consider the planned service model, opening hours, staffing and sales channels. Show which assumptions come from the franchisor, which come from the proposed location and which are your own estimates.

We prepare the business plan in-house and connect the narrative with the budget. For your planning discussion, ask what happens if the opening moves or early sales differ from expectations. A clear explanation of those assumptions is more useful than a forecast that simply increases sales every month.

For a quick-service restaurant, café or takeout concept, show the assumptions behind average transaction value, customer volumes, food costs and staffing. Explain any delivery-platform costs and franchise royalties in the forecast where they apply. These are planning inputs for your particular location, not sales predictions based only on the brand name.

Recognize the difference between a build and a resale

A new restaurant franchise needs a plan for setup and the opening period. Buying an existing restaurant also requires a clear description of the purchase, the seller's records and any changes you intend to make. Treat renovations or replacement equipment after closing as visible project costs rather than leaving them outside the request.

We help organize the lender-facing information for the transaction you are actually pursuing. Your accountant and legal adviser should review the financial and contractual aspects of a purchase; financing preparation does not replace that due diligence.

Assess programs without assuming every expense qualifies

ISED lists restaurant equipment and costs to buy a franchise among examples that can be financed through the Canada Small Business Financing Program. Eligibility still depends on the program rules, cost category and application. The institution providing the loan is responsible for approval.

CSBFP is one potential route, not the only financing discussion. We consider suitable banks, credit unions and BDC according to the project and applicant. We do not treat a lender's logo or a recognized restaurant brand as a promise of funding.

Bring the location and financing work together

Share the proposed brand, city, premises status, budget and target opening or closing date. Keep the application updated if the lease proposal, equipment list or construction scope changes. Consistency between the supporting documents and your plan makes the request easier to review.

Our experience as former bankers and former franchisees shapes this work. We help you prepare the request and coordinate lender follow-up while keeping the focus on what your restaurant needs to open, operate or expand.

Your questions, answered

Can restaurant equipment be included in a franchise loan request?

It can be part of the request. The lender and financing product determine eligibility and terms. Provide a clear equipment list and quotes so the amount and purpose can be assessed.

Do you help with quick-service and other restaurant franchises?

We review food-service franchise projects individually, including new openings, resales and expansion. Tell us about the concept and transaction so we can identify the preparation needed.

Should I include costs paid before opening?

Record them in the project budget with their dates and supporting documents. Whether a previous payment can be included in financing depends on the lender and program rules; do not assume reimbursement is available.
